The Chemical Compositions in the Cell Wall ofSalmonella typhimuriumaffecting the Clearance-Rate in Mouse

Abstract: In view of the significance of the bacterial surface as an important determinant for the host cell-parasite relationship, the rate of the bacterial clearance from the blood circulation or in the peritoneal cavity of mice was compared between the wild type Salmonella typhimurium LT2 and its mutants which have different sugar components in their cell wall. The mutants which are devoid of the tetrasaccharide sequence of abequosyl-rnannosyl-rhamnosyl-galactose in their cell wall were rapidly eliminated from the ci… Show more

“…The immunogenicity and virulence of various mutant strains of LT2 have been reported to be correlated with the components of their LPS (13). The capability of mutant bacteria to elicit protective immunity in mice against infection with pathogenic LT2 is thus roughly dependent on the sugar composition of their LPS, as shown in the present study and elsewhere (13).…”

The capability of mutant bacteria to elicit protective immunity in mice against infection with pathogenic LT2 is thus roughly dependent on the sugar composition of their LPS, as shown in the present study and elsewhere (13). However, FTS potentiated the protective immunity elicited by immunization with different mutant bacteria to almost the same extent, irrespective of the immunogenicity of the mutants.…”

“…Opsonic and bactericidal actions of antibodies are quite specific for the antigenic components of polysaccharides on the cell surfaces of the organisms (13,14). Cell-mediated protection against salmonella infection does not depend on the surface o antigenic components of the organisms (12,22).…”

“…Virulent wild-type S. typhimurium LT2 and derived attenuated rough mutant strains TV119 and SL1004 were used. Origin, characteristics, virulence and immunogenicity of these bacterial strains were reported elsewhere [23,24]. Bacterial suspensions were prepared in saline from an 18 hr culture on Difco nutrient agar, and 0.2 ml of the suspension was injected into mice intraperitoneally (ip) or intravenously (iv).…”
