The Chemistry of Sulfur Tetraflouride

Abstract: Current knowledge regarding the chemical a d physicd properties of suIfur tetrafiuoride is reviewed. The structural features of the compound are discussed, and its toxicological properties are presented. Particular attention is given to its reactions as a fluorinating agent in view of the widespread interest in this facet of its chemistry. Received, May 25th, 1962 [A 218/38 IE]

“…Sulphur tetrafluoride ( 7 ) , selenium tetrafluoride (8), and iodine pentafluoride (9) cause displacement of only one-third of the oxygen to form chromyl fluoride, Cr02F2. Bromine tri-and penta-fluoride and chlorine trifluoride, which are more vigorous fluorinating agents, displace two-thirds of the oxygen to give the unstable oxytrifluoride, CrOF,.…”

“…Sulfur tetrafluoride is an important covalent binary main‐group fluoride that has seen routine use in inorganic and organic chemistry 11. Since SF 4 has been used as a deoxofluorinating agent in organic chemistry, the study of its interactions with organic Lewis bases and their subsequent impact on its structure is essential to gain deep insights into the mechanism of deoxofluorination.…”

“…It has a deoxofluorination (substitution of oxygen-containing functional groups with F atom) ability with a weak oxidation power, and is widely established especially in organic chemistry. 23 Successful introduction of F atom into carbon materials by the use of SF4 was also reported for a few cases such as graphite oxide and graphene oxide. 24,25 Although there was a report about reactions of AC with SF4, it did not focus on electrochemical performance but water adsorption properties and surface acidity.…”
