The chromosomal component of reproductive isolation in the grasshopper caledia captiva III. Chiasma distribution patterns in a new chromosomal taxon

Abstract: SUMMARYAn analysis of chiasma distribution patterns among two classes of F1 hybrids produced by crossing a new chromosomal taxon, Lakes Entrance (LE), to both the Moreton (MAX) and Torresian (TT) taxa, has demonstrated that, when compared to their parental taxa, the (MAX < LE)F hybrids have very different distribution patterns whereas the (LE XTT)F1 hybrids have similar distribution patterns. Chiasmata in the Lakes Entrance and Torresian taxa, and their F1 hybrids generally show proximal-distal patterns of loc… Show more

“…In order to investigate the components of hybrid inviability involved in the products of Moreton x Torresian crosses, Coates and Shaw (1982) examined the pattern of meiotic recombination in F1 hybrids. This analysis demonstrated a major perturbation in the positioning of chiasmata that was directly attributable to the pericentric inversion differences between these two taxa.…”

“…The deviation from the expected frequencies was entirely the result of intrachromosomal interactions . Secondly, Coates and Shaw (1984) carried out experimental crosses involving the Torresian and Moreton chromosomal forms and a third chromosomal form named the "Lakes Entrance" taxon. This latter taxon is characterized by an acrocentric karyotype similar to that of Torresian individuals, but it is allozymically indistinguishable from Moreton, and it contains the numerous interstitial C-bands common in the Moreton subspecies (Coates and Shaw, 1984).…”
