“…The morphology of the chromosomes is in agreement with the results obtained for specimens of L barbarus from Algeria by Filippucci, Civitelli and Capanna (1986). We here follow Carleton and Van der Straeten (1997) who distinguished the maghrebi and subsaharan forms of Lemniscomys, though both with 2N = 54 and NFa = 58, and assigned them respectively to L barbarus and L zebra.…”

“…Two of them coming from Gamnaga were karyotyped and shown to possess 2n = 54 chromosomes, with NFa = 58, X submetacentric and Y metacentric (data not shown). These results are in agreement with available data for L. zebra in Southern Niger and Zakouma NP, Chad (Dobigny, unpublished), Tanzania (Castiglia et al 2002) as well as for L. barbarus in Algeria (Filipucci et al 1986). Four individuals from Gamnaga, Kossa and Zéra were sequenced (Genbank accession numbers HM635851-HM635854), and as expected, our sequence data (not shown) were clearly congruent in showing that striped rats from Northern Cameroon belong to the Sudanian species, L. zebra (Fig.…”
