The circle of life: using Green HRM strategies to develop a circular economy

Abstract

The growth and development of technology and within the economy in general has produced several positive results. From increased connectivity to more efficient processes and systems, there is no doubt that these advancements have contributed significantly to the current state of the world. However, there have also been areas that have suffered negatively as a consequence. The degradation of the environment is one such area. The resources that are sometimes required for the development of the organisation put so much strain on the environment that it raises questions on whether this growth can be sustained long term with the finite supplies available. The environmental issues that have arisen have become a major concern for both individuals and organisations. Previously, organisations have been able to get away with neglecting their environmental responsibilities; however, this is no longer an aspect they can ignore. As consumers become more aware of the detrimental effects that some of the activities that organisations engage in cause, there has been widespread calls for action to be taken. Sustainability conscious organisations are investing greatly into transitioning to a circular economy, where the theme is to reduce, reuse and recycle. This allows organisations to create value even from waste and offers a sustainable practice.
