The classification of Avonian limestones

Abstract: In systematised stratigraphical classification 'Avonian' is a term junior to 'Dinantian'; but in present ignorance of the precise correlative equivalents of Dinantian assises and Avonian zones the term is conveniently retained for the Lower Carboniferous rocks, most of them typical 'Carboniferous Limestone', of the British South-Western Province, where there is also ignorance of the precise horizons of the Fammennian-Dinantian junction and the Dinantian-Namurian junction. At the same time, the Avonian assembla… Show more

“…Sedimentary evidence suggests it is not a subaqueous distributary channel (Wright, 1981). This base-level change was also probably tectonic in origin with the Llanelly Formation itself having been completely removed locally in pre-Holkerian times in the inner ramp area (George, 1972).…”

“…The province was bounded to the north by a small land mass, St George's Land (Fig. 1 George (1972). submarine volcanics, olistostromes, black shales, radiolarian shales and cherts, and turbidites. These have been interpreted as representing rise, flysch and basin deposits (Isaac, Turner & Stewart, 1982;Selwood & Thomas, 1986) and the overall setting for the basin has been compared to modern back-arc basins by Leeder (1982).…”

“…The old fable about the value of the presence or absence of micrite as a criterion for "low" or "high" energy deposition is exposed as the hydrodynamic nonsense it nearly always was. The sheer complexity of carbonate sediments and the need for a broadminded approach to interpretation has been vividly demonstrated by George (25). We must look for micrite fringes on grains and irregular clusters of pellety micrite or patches of geopetal micrite in the pores of calcarenites.…”

“…Much of the unit consists of mudstones and shales interpreted as offshore muddy facies. There is evidence in the form of carbonate barrier facies of up to three minor regressive (progradational) phases during the deposition of the mudrocks but each was short-lived and the unit culminates in very extensive mudrock deposition representing the maximum extent of the Carboniferous transgression (George, 1972).…”

“…The Asbian succession is very different in style with massive to thick-bedded, fossiliferous bioclastic and peloidal limestones rich in dasycladacean algae becoming dominant over most of the region (George, 1972). The sequence contains a number of palaeokarstic surfaces (Thomas, 1953).…”
