“…First recognized in 2005 (Armand‐Lefevre et al ; Voss et al ), livestock‐associated methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA‐MRSA) belonging to clonal complex (CC) 398 represents an occupational risk for those in close contact with livestock in many countries (Butaye et al ). In livestock‐dense areas, especially in mainland Europe, it can represent a significant proportion of human MRSA isolates (van Loo et al ; Larsen et al ; van Alen et al ) and may be responsible for a range of infections including serious illness (Becker et al ; Larsen et al ).
