A study was carried out in a group of patients in whom re¯ux esophagitis was diagnosed 4.5± 7.5 years previously in order to assess current complaints and use of medication. A questionnaire was mailed to all patients in whom re¯ux esophagitis was diagnosed. Patients were asked about the presence of re¯ux complaints. Use of medication was assessed (continuous, intermittent, or on demand). In the 3-year period, re¯ux esophagitis was diagnosed in 312 patients (195 men, 117 women, mean age 59.6 years, range 17±96 years). The questionnaire was mailed to 246 patients, of whom 172 (70%) responded. Of these, 146 (85%) used acid-suppressive therapy. One hundred and eight (74%) used drugs on a daily basis, 31 on demand and 19 prophylactically in order to prevent the occurrence of re¯ux complaints. Despite the use of medication, patients suered signi®cantly more often from re¯ux complaints than did individuals who did not use any medication. It is concluded that the majority of patients (85%) still use acid-suppressive therapy and, in 74% of cases, on a daily basis. Maintenance therapy cannot prevent clinical relapse.
