The Clinicopathologic Spectrum of Benign Mass Lesions of the Vocal Fold due to Vocal Abuse

Abstract: Benign masses of the vocal fold related to phonotrauma are clinically classified into polyps, nodules, Reinke's edema, and cysts. Despite the apparent distinctiveness of the clinical nomenclature, low inter- and intraobserver diagnostic agreement has been reported. Excepting cysts, which are epithelial lined, histologic examination of the remaining lesions has shown a variety of overlapping features insufficiently specific for the clinical diagnoses. This study reviews the clinicopathologic characteristics amo… Show more

“…Non-neoplastic vocal fold lesions make up the majority of benign lesions and include cysts, nodules, polyps, Reinke’s edema, granulomas, ectasias, sulcus vocalis, and scar. Benign vocal fold lesions are typically distinguished by their phenotype, but there is limited knowledge of the etiology and progression of these diseases [ 7 ]. Mechanical, chemical, and thermal trauma; overuse and misuse; or combinations of these factors are thought to contribute to lesion development via remodeling of the lamina propria.…”

“…Oft können klinische Entitäten wie Knötchen, Polypen, Zysten oder Ödeme nicht sicher histologisch voneinander unterschieden werden [23,24]. In unserem Kollektiv war die feingewebliche Untersuchung jedoch üblicherweise mit der klinischen Diagnose vereinbar (397/400, 99,3 %).…”

“…Laryngeal polyp is defined pathologically as a noninflammatory response to laryngeal injury usually caused by vocal cord abuse and irritation [1]. "Vocal abuse" refers to misuse of vocal behaviors leading eventually to trauma of the laryngeal mucosa, such as by excessive talking, prolonged and excessive loudness, and the use of inappropriate pitch [2]. Thus, it is more common in singers [1].…”
