The Clutch Size of the Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus himantopus

Abstract: The number of eggs in nests of the Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus himantopus in areas in Tokyo Metropolis and Chiba Prefecture, around the Tokyo Bay was investigated. The mean ± SE number of eggs in nests was 3.50±0.06 (n= 384, range 1-10). Instances of five or more eggs in a nest were suggested to have been produced by two or three females. The mean ± SE of clutch size by monogamous pairs was 3.36±0.05 (n=362, range1-4).

“…It has been suggested that the clutches with 3 or more eggs in the nest were laid by 2 or 3 females. In monogamous pairs, the clutch size equaled 3.36 ± 0.05 (n = 362, lim 1-4) (Kitagawa, 2005). In the Sahara Desert, Eastern Algeria these birds mostly have four-egg clutches (Adamou et al, 2009) with the last egg smaller than the others.…”

“…"Double clutches" were common, i.e. laid by several females in the same nest (Kitagawa, 2005;Diallo et al, 2019). In the northern part of the Azov Sea region, the average clutch size of the black-winged stilt was 3.75 ± 0.13 (n = 13), with CV = 12.0 % (lim 3-4) (Koshelev, 2020).…”

“…Nests were constructed on open wetlands along the water side, upon open shallow water surfaces, in short vegetation or bare land on small low islets within ponds, and on slightly raised mounds in shallow water. The average clutch size was 3.36 eggs (Kitagawa 2005). The first chick hatched 26ῌ27 days after the first egg was laid, and the remaining eggs hatched until the next day.…”

“…These were regarded as extraordinary breeding activities in this population, because 95.3% of breeding groups observed there comprised monogamous pairs (Kitagawa 2005). However, these six cases are interesting material to consider how bigamous breeding and cooperative breeding may have developed from monogamous breeding.…”
