The CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter Detector Control System

Abstract: This paper presents the Detector Control System (DCS) designed and implemented for the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN. The focus is on its distributed controls software architecture, the deployment of the application into production and its integration into the overall CMS DCS. The knowledge acquired from operational issues during the detector commissioning and the first phase of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics runs is discussed and future impro… Show more

“…The Electromagnetic Calorimeter is one of the particle detectors of the Compact Muon Solenoid [1] experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider [2]. In accordance with the CMS ECAL layout, a Detector Control System [3][4][5] was developed and divided in three main partitions: Barrel (EB), Endcaps (EE) and Preshower (ES). The successful physics data taking of the CMS ECAL strongly relies on the perfect functioning and high availability of the DCS.…”

“…The CMS ECAL DCS controls and monitors the power supplies and provides monitoring of the environmental conditions within the detector volume to ensure that it is running within acceptable parameters [1]. Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)-based safety systems are responsible for interlocking the detector sub-systems in case of safety critical conditions.…”
