The coastal marine mollusc fauna of King Island, Tasmania

Abstract: The findings of a week-long survey of coastal marine molluscs around King Island are documented. In total, 408 species were recorded, 78 for the first time. King Island appears to be the only Tasmanian outpost for 44 species. Only two non-native species were found. A number of usually distinct species-pairs or groups appear to form intergrades around King Island. Along the island's east coast, beached shells belonging to Quaternary-era sub-fossils were found, not all of which are represented in the contemporar… Show more

“…Shell deposits were identified for poor habitat fidelity from upper estuarine and/or intertidal to supra-tidal zones (Grove, 2017). The temporal shell fidelity with respect to the Anthropocene was measured from the 14 C of the shell carbonate from the largest and dominant species (ANSTO).…”

“…Even though the invertebrate values on Tasmania's offshore islands are becoming better known, this faunal group remains significantly under-surveyed. The coastal mollusc fauna on King Island contains at least 408 species with 78 being recorded for the first time by Grove and de Little (2014). Hamish Saunders Memorial Island surveys and Oil Spill Response surveys have targeted the PLATE 2 -Dolerite structural columns on Tasman Island.…”

“…The genus Berthelinia s.l. comprises species in several potentially distinct genera (Edenttellina, Midorigai, Tamanovalva), which are currently considered junior synonyms but often still used in identification (Grove and de Little 2014;Wägele and Martin 2014). There is, thus, some modest diversity in the family.…”
