Received concepts of neural activity, building on the technical concepts of information processing and coding, do not formulate the problems that an organism must formulate in order to cope with its environment. Specifically, this includes the problems of self-maintenance and adaptation, and how such activities are to be monitored and corrected in case of their (anticipated) deviation from viable norms. In this paper, it is shown how the functional systems theory of P. K. Anokhin formulated key notions of adaptive control, self-monitoring, and self-detectable (“system-detectable”) error that directly anticipate current debates on neural information and representation, and allow to reframe these debates in new empirical and theoretical perspectives. In addition to showing this on the basis of early (less known and untranslated) works, we analyze how functional systems pose new questions for current research. Specifically, recent discoveries in integrative and cellular neuroscience regarding the biophysical limits of signal summation in neural cells directly confirm Anokhin’s analysis of the integrative activities of the neuron. These findings may have wide implications, and call for new and biologically more specific models of the integrative and semiotic closure of nervous activity, in line with the systemic closure of the organismic functions in which they participate.

This work aimed to study the recovery of consciousness during forced awakening from slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM) in healthy volunteers. To track the changes in the degree of awareness of the stimuli during the transition to wakefulness, event-related potentials (ERPs) and motor responses (MR) in the auditory local-global paradigm were analyzed. The results show that during awakening from both SWS and REM, first, alpha-activity restores in the EEG, and only 20 and 25 s (for REM and SWS awakenings, respectively) after alpha onset MR to target stimuli recovers. During REM awakening, alpha-rhythm, MR, and conscious awareness of stimuli recover faster than during SWS awakening. Moreover, pre-attentive processing of local irregularities emerges earlier, even before alpha-rhythm onset, while during SWS awakening, the local effect we registered only after alpha restoration. The P300-like response both on global and local irregularities was found only when accurate MR was restored. Thus, the appearance in EEG predominating alpha-activity is insufficient either for conscious awareness of external stimuli or for generating MR to them. This work may help to understand the pathophysiology of sleep disorders well as conditions characterized by the dissociation between behavior and various aspects of consciousness.

Аннотация. Речь в работе идет о нейронных гиперсетях и процессах сознания, с которыми мы работаем. Сознание -это специфический процесс в специфически организованной структуре. Это структура нейронной гиперсети, описываемой формальным языком, специфический процесс -это процесс глобальной перколяции активности в указанной сети. Статья начинается с определения сознания, далее показано, что разобраться в этой теме можно только с помощью теории. На сегодняшний день имеется большое количество теорий сознания, мы выделяем в них физико-математическое направление, разбираем некоторые из этих теорий. Далее речь идет о той теории, которую мы называем теорией нейронных гиперсетей, о некоторых принципах устройства этой структуры, так, как она представляется нейрофизиологам. Сознание представляет собой особый вид трафика в этой специфической структуре, отличающейся от известных представлений в теориях нейронных сетей.Ключевые слова: сознание, когнитом, функциональные системы, нейрофизиология, трафик, искусственный интеллект Annotation. The work is about neural hypernetworks with which we work. Consciousness is a specific process in a specifically organized structure. This is the structure of a neural hypernetwork, described in formal language, a specific process -the process of global percolation of activity in this network. The article begins with a definition of consciousness, then it is shown that this topic can only be understood with the help of theory. Today there are a large number of theories of consciousness, we highlight the physical and mathematical direction in them, and analyze some of these theories. Next we talk about the theory that we call the theory of neural hypernetworks, about some principles of the structure of this structure, as it appears to neurophysiologists. Consciousness represents a special kind of traffic in this specific structure, which differs from the known concepts in neural network theories.
