The Collagen Suprafamily: From Biosynthesis to Advanced Biomaterial Development

Abstract: Collagen is the oldest and most abundant extracellular matrix protein that has found many applications in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and biomedical industries. First, an overview of the family of collagens and their respective structures, conformation, and biosynthesis is provided. The advances and shortfalls of various collagen preparations (e.g., mammalian/marine extracted collagen, cell‐produced collagens, recombinant collagens, and collagen‐like peptides) and crosslinking technologies (e.g., chemical,… Show more

“…Thus far, MMC has been shown to enhance ECM deposition in various permanently differentiated and stem cell populations (41, 42, 47). It is worth noting that in the deposited under MMC conditions collagen exhibits the characteristic d ‐periodicity (41, 42), a strong indicator for a regular self‐assembly of collagen molecules (53). Although MMC has been previously combined with other microenvironmental modulators, such as hypoxia (47, 54), it is yet to be used simultaneously with mechanical stimulation.…”

“…Collagen is an important protein in animal connective tissue. It is also the main component of extracellular matrix (ECM) and could provide support for cell growth (Sorushanova et al, 2019). Osteogenesis imperfect (OI), also known as brittle bone disease, is a genetic connective tissue disorder with genetic and phenotypic diversity (Friedrich, Scheuer & Holtje, 2019;Subramanian & Viswanathan, 2019).…”

“…The paraffin base layer of the capsule does not permit cell attachment, which may be a possible requirement for collagen production. Other more complex biomaterials may be needed for more enhanced collagen and the production of other extracellular structures …”
