The Raspas Metamorphic Complex of southwestern Ecuador is regarded as the southernmost remnant of oceanic and continental terranes accreted in the latest Jurassic -Early Cretaceous. It consists of variably metamorphosed rock types. (1) Mafic and ultramafic rocks metamorphosed under high-pressure (HP) conditions (eclogite facies) show oceanic plateau affinities with flat REE chondrite-normalized patterns, eNd 150 Ma ranging from + 4.6 to 9.8 and initial Pb isotopic ratios intermediate between MORB and OIB. (2) Sedimentary rocks metamorphosed under eclogitic conditions exhibit LREE enriched patterns, strong negative Eu anomalies, Rb, Nb, U, Th, Pb enrichments, low eNd 150 Ma values (from À 6.4 to À 9.5), and high initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and 206,207,208 Pb/ 204 Pb isotopic ratios suggesting they were originally sediments derived from the erosion of an old continental crust. (3) Epidote-bearing amphibolites show N-MORB affinities with LREE depleted patterns, LILE, Zr, Hf and Th depletion, high eNd 150 Ma (> + 10) and low initial Pb isotopic ratios. The present-day well defined internal structure of the Raspas Metamorphic Complex seems to be inconsistent with the formerly proposed interpretation of a ''tectonic mélange''. The association of oceanic plateau rocks and continent-derived sediments both metamorphosed in HP conditions suggests that the thin edge of the oceanic plateau first entered the subduction zone and dragged sediments downward of the accretionary wedge along the Wadatti -Benioff zone. Subsequently, when its thickest part arrived into the subduction zone, the oceanic plateau jammed the subduction processes, due to its high buoyancy. In Ecuador and Colombia, the latest Jurassic -Early Cretaceous suture involves HP oceanic plateau rocks and N-MORB rocks metamorphosed under lower grades, suggesting a composite or polyphase nature for the latest Jurassic -Early Cretaceous accretionary event. RESUMENAl oriente de la Cordillera Central Colombiana, en el municipio de San Luis-Tolima, afloran rocas ígneas plutónicas post-Triásico Tardío conocidas como Stock de Payandé. Los resultados de campo, petrográficos y geoquímicos revelan que estas rocas corresponden a un solo cuerpo con variaciones composicionales desde diorita gabróica a granodiorita, siendo ésta última la litología predominante en el área de estudio. Los diagramas de discriminación tectónica muestran que las rocas están asociadas a ambientes de arcos volcánicos formados en márgenes continentales activas. Las comparaciones químicas y posición de este intrusivo, permiten hacer una correlación a nivel regional con cuerpos plutónicos y volcano-sedimentarios reportados como Jurásicos en el Valle Superior del Magdalena (VSM) y en la Cordillera Central de Colombia. PETROGRAPHY AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF PAYANDÉ STOCK AND ITS RELATION TO JURASIC MAGMATISM OF THE SOUTHERN COLOMBIA ABSTRACTPost-Triassic plutonic rocks, known as Payande Stock, are outcropping in the eastern flank of the Colombian Central Cordillera nearby San Luis-Tolima town. Detailed cartographic, petrographic, and geochemical analyses carried out on these rocks reveal compositional variations from gabbroic diorite to granodiorite. Tectonic discrimination diagrams show that the Payande Stock is associated with volcanic arcs formed in active continental margins. The chemical characteristics and fieldwork allow us to make a comparison between this intrusive with volcanic and plutonic regional bodies originated during the Jurassic in the Central Cordillera and Upper Magdalena Valley.

Transition From Collisional to Subduction‐Related Regimes: An Example From Neogene Panama‐Nazca‐South America Interactions

A geological transect across the suture separating northwestern South America from the Panama Arc helps document the provenance and thermal history of both crustal domains and the suture zone. During middle Miocene, strata were being accumulated over the suture zone between the Panama Arc and the continental margin. Integrated provenance analyses of those middle Miocene strata show the presence of mixed sources that includes material derived from the two major crustal domains: the old northwestern South American orogens and the younger Panama Arc. Coeval moderately rapid exhumation of Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene sediments forming the reference continental margin is suggested from our inverse thermal modeling. Strata within the suture zone are intruded by ~12 Ma magmatic arc‐related plutons, marking the transition from a collisional orogen to a subduction‐related one. Renewed late Miocene to Pliocene acceleration of the exhumation rates is the consequence of a second tectonic pulse, which is likely to be triggered by the onset of a flat‐slab subduction of the Nazca plate underneath the northernmost Andes of Colombia, suggesting that late Miocene to Pliocene orogeny in the Northern Andes is controlled by at least two different tectonic mechanisms.
