The colonisation ofLutzomyia youngiand the putative role of free-living nematodes in the biology of phlebotomine sandfly larvae

Abstract: Summary :A closed colony of Lutzomyia youngi Murillo & Zeledón from the Venezuelan Andes was successfully established in the laboratory with a larval food containing two free-living nematodes (Coenorhabditis sp. and Aphelenchoides bicaudatus). This raises the question of the relationships between sandfly larvae and associated terrestrial fauna.KEY WORDS : Lutzomyia youngi, phlebotomine sandflies, colonisation, freeliving nematodes, Caenorhabditis sp., Aphelenchoides bicaudatus. “…Females engorged from the field or the lab were individually separated for egg laying and morphologically identified after death, according to the method of Galati (2018). After egg hatching, larvae were reared in the Insectarium of the Ralph Lainson Leishmaniases Lab (Instituto Evandro Chagas, Brazil), according to the method described by Killick-Kendrick and Killick-Kendrick (1991).…”
