The Colorado Thyroid Disease Prevalence Study

Abstract: The prevalence of abnormal biochemical thyroid function reported here is substantial and confirms previous reports in smaller populations. Among patients taking thyroid medication, only 60% were within the normal range of TSH. Modest elevations of TSH corresponded to changes in lipid levels that may affect cardiovascular health. Individual symptoms were not very sensitive, but patients who report multiple thyroid symptoms warrant serum thyroid testing. These results confirm that thyroid dysfunction is common, … Show more

“…In two population-based studies, the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism ranged between 7.5–8.5% in women and 4.4% in men [13,14]. Subclinical hypothyroidism prevalence increases in women with increasing age and is more common in elderly females (7–18%) than males (2–15%) [15,16]. …”

“…Current estimates suggest that it affects as many as 9% to 15% of the adult female population and a smaller percentage of adult males. 7 This gender-specific prevalence almost certainly results from the underlying autoimmune mechanism for the most common forms of thyroid disease, which include both Graves' and Hashimoto's disease. 8 However, with advancing age, especially beyond the eighth decade of life, the incidence of disease in males rises to be equal to that of females.…”

“…8 However, with advancing age, especially beyond the eighth decade of life, the incidence of disease in males rises to be equal to that of females. 7 In the present review we will address the clinical manifestations of thyroid disease from a cardiovascular perspective and the thyroid function tests that are most appropriate to confirm the suspected diagnosis. In addition, we will discuss the new data that demonstrate the changes in thyroid hormone metabolism that arise from acute myocardial infarction and chronic congestive heart failure.…”

“…(HEPATOLOGY 2010;52:1401-1409 H ypothyroidism is well known to be associated with elevated serum TC, which can result in hypercholesterolemia. 1,2 The underlying mechanism is widely thought to be TH deficiency. However, elevation of serum TC has also been observed in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH), in which TSH is elevated but TH stays within its normal range. 1,3,4 Thus, the development of…”
