The combination of resveratrol and conjugated linoleic acid is not useful in preventing obesity

Abstract: Scientific research is constantly looking for new molecules to be used as functional ingredients to combat obesity. The aim of the present study was to analyse whether resveratrol and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) together could reduce body fat more efficiently than their separate administration. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: controls rats (C), rats treated with resveratrol (RSV), rats treated with CLA (CLA) and rats treated with a combination of resveratrol and CLA (RSV+… Show more

“…For this purpose a dose of 30 mg/kg body weight/day of RSV was selected because in a previous study conducted in our laboratory we observed that it was an effective dose in preventing diet‐induced insulin resistance . With regard to energy restriction it is important to point out that, in the vast majority of the reported studies, it ranges from 20 to 40%.…”

“…This is to say that animals received the phenolic compound and the diabetogenic diet at the same time, and thus RSV showed a preventive effect. In this line, we also found a reduction in HOMA‐IR value, in previous studies in which RSV was administered to rats together with a HFHS diet . However, in this study, rats were previously submitted to HFHS feeding pattern and then, when insulin resistance was established, they were switched to a standard diet and treated with RSV, not to prevent but rather to reverse the metabolic alteration.…”

“…Asterisk denotes statistically significant differences compared to NC (*p < 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001). molecular mixture of cis-9, trans-11 and trans-10, cis-12 CLA was added to the diet of Wistar rats to reach 0.5 of active isomer trans-10, cis-12 CLA, and no differences in final body weight after 6 weeks were found between control and CLA-treated rats 49 . Similarly, no differences in body weight gain was observed between control group and animals fed with a diet containing 0.25 cis-9, trans-11 and 0.25 trans-10, cis-12 CLA 12 .…”

“…Creatine and HMB also seem to have an additive effect [32]. Incompatible pairs included CLA and resveratrol (the latter being present under the label "Bioflavonoids" in "Multi-guard Sport" tablets), as well as alpha lipoic acid and benzoic acid [33][34][35]. In such cases, the incompatible supplements were not taken together.…”
