“…In order to classify subtypes of HE such as irritant and/or allergic contact dermatitis with or without atopy, an algorithm has been provided for clinical work‐up . However, the rate of a combination of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis with 9–21% seemed to be calculated as too high because irritant contact dermatitis was often overdiagnosed due to vague criteria …”

“…Accordingly, persons in these occupations will most likely fulfil the criteria for ICD and wet work if they develop dermatitis . The unsuitability of diagnosing combined ACD and ICD is illustrated when patients diagnosed with ACD work in an environment where the wet work criteria are met . Exposure to both allergens and irritants can occur in the work environment, and although the combined diagnosis may be applicable, it should be used critically to avoid misclassification.…”

“…We also may deal with a "hybrid," a combination of irritant and allergic factors, as has been described early on in cutting fluid dermatitis [57]. Recently, 1000 consecutive patients with occupational contact dermatitis from a hospital unit in Denmark were assessed [58]. In 6.4% the diagnosis of combined allergic and irritant contact dermatitis was made.…”
