Inanimate Alice is a multimodal narrative told across six episodes of increasing technological and literary complexity. As Alice grows from age eight to young adulthood, she lives her dream of becoming a game designer. Using her handheld digital device and developing skills, Alice creates a digital best friend, Brad, who is always ready to rush to Alice's aid as she works through the problems and challenges she encounters in her life. The Inanimate Alice series is a coming-of-age tale that leverages the possibilities of transmedia narratives to engage and immerse readers in the story as they adopt a "first-person-reader" point of view mirroring established expectations from game-play in many popular video games. Readers step into Alice's shoes, share her experiences as she travels around the globe, play the games she has created, and join her on the pathway towards becoming a game designer. This brief paper discusses the theoretical perspectives and practical implications for integrating the transmedia series, Inanimate Alice, into STEM curriculum. Public scholarship and a growing body of empirical work point to the benefits to students when Inanimate Alice is integrated into literacy and STEM classrooms. This evidence is provided against the backdrop of the global health crisis, positioning multimodal storytelling as a tool for remote learning that engages learners in subjects as diverse as physical sciences and computational thinking. This paper forwards a multi-theoretical framework appropriate for planning interdisciplinary instruction in literature and STEM.

Understanding Transmedia Music on YouTube through Disney Storytelling

Transmedia storytelling has been integrated into contemporary society through social media, where influencers have enabled the building of worlds. Within this environment of human-interaction, fiction and converging social realities have become an essential tool to tell stories. On YouTube, storytelling has expanded to music, where cover videos take on great relevance. The aim of this study is to understand the transmedia music phenomenon due to the impact of music on the platform. To this end, we applied a methodology that stemmed from Grounded Theory principles in the analysis of 300 Disney animation song covers in three stages: (1) deductive and inductive codebook development; (2) social network analysis; and (3) statistical test. The results showed that youtubers highlight specific audiovisual codes from the film and cultural industries. Furthermore, we observed these productions often display configurations that expand the original story through performance, location, costumes, make-up, among others. We argue that, on the digital sphere, a sustainable transmedia music paradigm is developing, where performers construct more meaningful and valuable stories.

More and more digital 3D city models might evolve into spatiotemporal instruments with time as the 4th dimension. For digitizing the current situation, 3D scanning and photography are suitable tools. The spatial future could be integrated using 3D drawings by public space designers and architects. The digital spatial reconstruction of lost historical environments is more complex, expensive and rarely done. Three-dimensional co-creative digital drawing with citizens’ collaboration could be a solution. In 2016, the City of Ghent (Belgium) launched the “3D city game Ghent” project with time as one of the topics, focusing on the reconstruction of disappeared environments. Ghent inhabitants modelled in open-source 3D software and added animated 3D gamification and Transmedia Storytelling, resulting in a 4D web environment and VR/AR/XR applications. This study analyses this low-cost interdisciplinary 3D co-creative process and offers a framework to enable other cities and municipalities to realise a parallel virtual universe (an animated digital twin bringing the past to life). The result of this co-creation is the start of an “Animated Spatial Time Machine” (AniSTMa), a term that was, to the best of our knowledge, never used before. This research ultimately introduces a conceptual 4D space–time diagram with a relation between the current physical situation and a growing number of 3D animated models over time.
