The Complementarity of MDG Achievements: The Case of Child Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: The Policy Research Working Paper Series disseminates the findings of work in progress to encourage the exchange of ideas about development issues. An objective of the series is to get the findings out quickly, even if the presentations are less than fully polished. The papers carry the names of the authors and should be cited accordingly. The findings, interpretations, and conclusions expressed in this paper are entirely those of the authors. They do not necessarily represent the views of the International Ba… Show more

“…This study is based on the framework that all socioeconomic variables operate through a limited set of 'proximate' determinants (intermediate variables) that directly influence the risk of disease and the outcome of disease conditions (Lay and Robilliard, 2009;Mosley and Chen, 1984;Victora et al 1997). These proximate variables could be sub-classified as biodemographic, environmental and health/behavioural factors.…”

“…In some cases, for example in Nepal and Laos, these measures were accompanied by public awareness campaigns aimed at increasing demand for the services offered. In a cross-country comparison of 8 sub-Saharan countries, Lay and Robilliard (2009) also find the expansion of vaccination coverage, a factor that is correlated with other early childhood interventions, to be among the major explanatory factors for the relative successes in their sample, for example in Mozambique and Niger. This is in line with the earlier cross-country evidence from McGuire (2006), who shows child mortality rates to be strongly associated with maternal and infant health programme efforts, while overall public health-care spending turns out to have no significant effect.…”

“…A comprehensive and innovative contribution which attempts to directly investigate these interlinkages comes from the so called "MAMS studies" (see Bourguignon et al 2008b can be regarded as a "leading" item among the MDGs by promoting income poverty reduction, child mortality reduction, and the education of children (see Summers, 1994, Abu-Ghaida andKlasen, 2004;Klasen, 2005, Lay andRobilliard, 2009).…”
