Henry James and the Culture of Consumption Miranda El-Rayess This book explores Henry James's imaginative engagements with the burgeoning consumer culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, focusing on his hitherto neglected fascination with shops and the shopping experience. Examining a wide range of the author's fiction and non-fiction in the context of developments such as the rise of the department store, the growing public presence of women shoppers and shop workers, and the increasing sophistication of commodity display and advertising, the book argues that consumer desire constitutes an integral part of James's understanding of modern subjectivity. It also demonstrates that the structures and strategies of commodity culture are deeply embedded in his style, his aesthetic and his conception of authorship. The study offers new readings of familiar and less familiar texts, and includes a wealth of original historical documentation that has been gleaned from contemporary newspapers, periodicals, advertising manuals, sales catalogues and guidebooks. This article reassesses James's class location, arguing that, as a non-productive rentier , Henry James Senior instilled in his son the primal fear of consuming the family's hoard of capital. I argue that this fear decisively shaped the aesthetic theory of the "impression" which James borrows from Walter Pater and develops in Roderick Hudson (1875). In the novel, James explores the economic and aesthetic dilemmas of hoarding versus expenditure: the need to save up impressions so as to produce a tangible return, as well as covertly expressing his fears that this investment might ultimately prove sterile and profitless.

The Portrait of a Lady 's chapter 42 vigil scene features Isabel Archer remembering Gilbert Osmond objecting to her moral sensibility by comparing her to a Unitarian minister. This article examines James's treatment of pre- and post-Civil War Unitarianism in book reviews and novels such as The American, The Bostonians , and The Europeans to evaluate James's reference and discovers that, far from being a minor part of James's characterization technique, his references to Unitarianism shed light onto the fundamental qualities that define Isabel Archer and thus shape the novel that centers so fully on her status as a moral being.
