The complete mitochondrial genome of the Downy woodpecker, Picoides pubescens (Piciformes: Picidae)

Abstract: The Downy woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) is a species of woodpecker which is the smallest in North America. This present study firstly reported the complete mitochondrial genome of downy woodpecker. We performed assembly of mitogenome structural by SPAdes and the Picidae species Dryocopus pileatus act as a reference. The mitogenome was 16 840 bp in length, which contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs and 1 putative misc-feature region. The overall AT content is 52.76% which is hi… Show more

“…Among these genes, ND6 and eight tRNAs (tRNA Gln , tRNA Ala , tRNA Asn , tRNA Cys , tRNA Tyr , tRNA Ser , tRNA Pro , and tRNA Glu ) were located on the light strand (Lstrand), while all of the remaining genes were located on the heavy strand (H-strand). The overall base composition of A. insignis mitogenome was 31.09% for A, 12.61% for G 28.96% for C, and 27.34% for T, A þ T content is 58.43%, which is higher than G þ C content of 41.57%, similar to other Piciformes (Fuchs et al 2015;Zhang et al 2016;Eo 2017).…”

“…We compared the results from the present study to previous mitogenome research on the family Picidae (Gibb et al 2007;Fuchs et al 2016;Zhang et al 2016;Anmarkrud and Lifjeld 2017;Eo 2017). Phylogenetic analysis based on the mitogenome sequences using the maximum likelihood general time reversible model (GTR) with gamma distributed (G) plus invariant sites (I) method showed that the D. major was closely related to Dendrocopos leucotos (Figure 1).…”
