The complexity of innovation: A relational turn

Abstract: Recent contributions within the system of innovation approach are marked by an instrumentalism that views innovation as a predictable and standardized process that in most aspects counters theories and empirical observations stressing the multilevel, spontaneous and complex features of innovation. Informed by the relational turn within economic geography this paper develops an alternative analytical framework. We do this stepwise: first, by elaborating on how innovation was originally defined within the system… Show more

“…Some scholars state that we need to be more sensitive with respect to socio-spatial and economic contexts, and call for a relational turn in studies of globally interconnected economic practice (Rath & Kloosterman 2000;Fløysand & Jakobsen 2010). In integrating geographical aspects with social and cultural aspects, this turn enables us to understand entrepreneurship among ethnic minorities as based on a mixed embeddedness rather than on affinity with co-ethnic networks only (Rath & Kloosterman 2000).…”

“…The concept is rather fuzzy and includes a wide array of couplings ranging from incidental spillovers to formal innovation collaboration and joint ventures (Fløysand & Jakobsen 2011). The innovation literature differs between searching, sourcing, and collaboration as three distinct type of networking (Herstad et al 2011).…”

“…The evolutionary perspective argues that over time firms within in a region can develop similarities according to routines, rules of conduct, and conventions that may provide guidance for firms' involvement in networking (i.e. the development of a regional industry culture) (Bathelt et al 2004;Fløysand & Jakobsen 2011). Through self-reinforcing effects an established pattern for networking within a region is maintained and a distinct development path will gain momentum within the region (Martin 2010).…”

“…In some cases, small adjustments in practices or technologies may represent innovative steps toward sustainability, while in other cases there is a strong need for more radical transformations. Some of the literature on innovation focuses on ensuring economic competitiveness for firms in an increasingly globalized economy (Fløysand and Jakobsen, 2010), and some concentrates on the relationship between environment on the one hand and the competitiveness of firms on the other (Mol and Sonnenfeld, 2000). In addition, there is a body of social science literature on innovation that has emerged during the last 15 years, motivated by the need for transforming society as a whole in more sustainable directions.…”
