Objective: To assess the correlates of the high risk sexual behaviors of Polish migrants in the United Kingdom (UK) after 2004, and to compare such behaviors before/after immigration. Methods: In 2013, a cross-sectional study was conducted through the use of a Computer-assisted web interviewing surveying technique with the use of a self-administered questionnaire. Results: Among 408 respondents (56.9% women), with a median age of 32 years, significantly more admitted to having unprotected sexual contact with a casual partner while in the UK (p < 0.0001) than while in Poland; more were engaged in sex after the use of recreational drugs and alcohol (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.001 respectively). Being a male was associated with greater odds of unprotected sex, sex after the use of alcohol, and having multiple partners. Being single and having only been a resident for a short time in the UK, presenting a lower self-esteem, were predictors of unprotected sex. A total of 19.6% of the respondents admitted to having been tested while in Poland, a lower (p < 0.0001) frequency than while in the UK (49.5%); this referred to both genders; 1.2% (95% CI: 0.79–2.83%) reported that they were HIV positive. Conclusions: Migration can create a vulnerability to STIs, especially for single male migrants with low self-esteem, staying in the UK for less than two years. The results point to strengthening strategies which help reduce high risk sexual behavior among Polish migrants, and to introduce interventions to promote an awareness of HIV sero-status.

El cyberbullying es un comportamiento intencional, agresivo y repetitivo que ocurre a través de tecnologías de la información y la comunicación –TIC-; esta problemática está relacionada con alteraciones en el bienestar emocional de las personas. El objetivo de esta investigación fue comprender las experiencias del miedo y la tristeza, como factores que vulneran la salud mental de los adolescentes implicados como espectadores de cyberbullying. Se realizó una investigación cualitativa con método fenomenológico-hermenéutico, en la que se entrevistaron 31 adolescentes, entre los 12 y 17 años de edad. Los hallazgos muestran que, a pesar de que los espectadores consideran que el cyberbullying tiene consecuencias graves para las víctimas, no intervienen en dichas situaciones, porque, a su vez, sienten miedo de ser cibervictimizados. Además, la tristeza también es una emoción central en la experiencia de los espectadores; esta emoción está relacionada con la empatía hacia las víctimas. Asimismo, los adolescentes construyen explicaciones sobre el comportamiento de las víctimas y de los agresores, a partir de su percepción sobre las emociones experimentadas por los demás. En suma, las emociones vividas por los espectadores de cyberbullying los implican subjetivamente en dicha problemática; razón por la cual, los espectadores también merecen atención psicosocial.

Quality of the ISO 9000 series of standards-perceptions of quality management experts

Purpose The authors of this study, who adopted a holistic view of the international organization for standardization (ISO) 9000 series of standards, aimed to evaluate the current status of the standards within the framework of the quality movement. Specifically, the evaluation covered two dimensions, i.e. the significance of the content included in the standards and the quality of the standards’ elaboration, which encompasses such issues as, for instance, their correctness, relevance to current trends in quality management, comprehensibility, etc. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a review of the scientific literature, analysis of the current and all previous versions of the international standards and the results of a survey, through which data were collected from 73 quality management experts from 17 different countries. To evaluate the results, an importance-performance analysis was performed. Findings As the results of the research demonstrated, experts in quality management have accepted the ISO 9000 standards series. However, this positive view refers mainly to the very idea of developing quality management standards and these standard’s content structure (components included in them). Study participants assigned a low rating to the quality of the standards’ elaboration. Therefore, improving the following aspects of the standards is essential: definitions, guidelines explaining the requirements for a quality management system, self-assessment tools and guidelines concerning quality management concerning chosen forms of activity. Research limitations/implications The research described here in has both practical and social implications. First, it delineates the direction needed to improve standardizations, whose use need not be strictly limited to quality management but can be successfully used to improve the standards in other areas of management. Therefore, the conclusions of this research directly contribute to increasing both the effectiveness and the quality of the standard organizations. The significant consequences of this research for managers are the identification of ISO 9000 components which they will find are the most useful. Practical implications The research described herein has both practical and social implications. First, it delineates the direction needed to improve standardizations, whose use need not be strictly limited to quality management. However, it can be successfully used to improve the standards in other areas of management. Therefore, the conclusions of this research directly contribute to increasing both the effectiveness and the quality of the standard organizations. The significant consequences of this research for managers are the identification of ISO 9000 components, which they will find are the most useful. Originality/value Most research treats ISO 9000 standards as a benchmark for their studies on quality management systems implemented in organizations. The standards themselves are rarely the subject of a study, and so this paper fills a gap in the research and provides insights into desired directions for standards improvement.
