The residue level, dissipation behavior, and dietary intake risk of chlorpyrifos-methyl, dimethoate, permethrin, iprodione, metalaxyl, and propargite in parsley (Petroselinum crispum) were investigated under field conditions. Extraction and determination of pesticide residues were carried out by a quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method and a gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS) system, respec-tively. Dissipation of chlorpyrifos-methyl, dimethoate, permethrin, iprodione, metalaxyl, and propargite in pars-ley followed the first-order kinetics with a half-life (t1/2) of 3.33, 3.30, 2.94, 3.52, 4.10, and 3.38 days, respectively. Based on the dissipation pattern and the maximum residue limits (MRL), preharvest intervals (PHI) of 25, 13, 18, 24, 1, and 16 days are suggested for chlorpyrifos-methyl, dimethoate, permethrin, iprodione, metalaxyl, and propargite in parsley, respectively. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of pesticides ranged from 7.37E-05 (dimeth-oate) to 8.00E-04 (metalaxyl) mg/kg. The chronic risk assessment showed that the hazard quotient (HQ) was <1 and Hazard Index (HI, indicating the cumulative exposure to pesticide residues) was <100%, demonstrating that an intake of pesticide residues from parsley was safe for humans.

Pollution Status of Pesticide Residues in Food Products in Iran: A Mini-review within 2008-2018

Background & Aims of the Study: Pesticides are widely used in the agricultural sector to control pests. Based on numerous studies, the presence of pesticide residues in food causes a wide array of diseases. The current study aimed to identify pesticide residues in foods of vegetal and animal origin and presented the methods used to reduce pesticide content in food before consumption. Materials and Methods: For the purpose of the study, the articles published within 2008-2018 were searched in the local and international databases, including PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, using the keywords of pesticides, food, Iran, and residual, in both Persian and English languages. The current study focused on pesticide residues in foods of vegetal and animal origin. Furthermore, this study discusses the methods used to reduce residual pesticide before consumption. The preliminary search yielded 185 articles. After reviewing the articles, 26 studies were finally selected considering the purpose of the study. Results: As evidenced by the obtained results, diazinon pesticide residue has been reported in many products. Pesticide residues were more frequently found in foods of vegetable origin, compared to those of animal origin. Effective factors influencing the presence of pesticide residues in food products include: farmers' unawareness, incorrect use of pesticide and inappropriate spraying, and disregard for the preharvest interval. Proper washing and immersion in alkaline solutions at a suitable time should be considered to decrease pesticide residues in food products before consumption. Conclusion: The consumption of food products containing pesticides is associated with a variety of risks to humans, including nervous system dysfunction, reproductive disorders, brain damage, mental illness, and respiratory system disorder. The impact of pesticide residues can be minimized by training and awareness of farmers, Proper washing food products before consumption and as well as the supervision of executive organizations are the keys to the reduction of pesticide application in foods.

Equilibrium sampling based on silicone polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been used to determine the concentrations of freely dissolved hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) and assess the thermodynamic potentials for bioaccumulation of these compounds in the aquatic environment. This allows the use of PDMS-based sampling techniques in assisting conventional sampling and extraction methods for the determination of the concentrations of HOCs in aquaculture products. The present study is an ex situ demonstration of how well PDMS can inform the tissue residues and dietary risks of legacy or current-use organic chemicals in aquaculture species from farm ponds in eastern China. For legacy contaminants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, n = 10), good agreement between the predicted concentrations based on PDMS and the measured lipid-normalized concentrations was observed for 60% of the studied biota, including both pelagic and benthic species. For pesticides currently used, such as pyrethroid (PE) (n = 4) and organophosphate pesticides (OPPs, n = 7), the measured tissue residues were consistently higher than those predicted by PDMS, possibly caused by the continuous input from the surroundings. For the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs, n = 5), the only detected chemical was also underestimated. Adjusted by ingestion rates of aquaculture products and toxicology data, the target hazard quotients of these chemicals predicted from PDMS were generally comparable to those derived from measured concentrations in tissue because of the predominance of PBDEs. Overall, PDMS-based equilibrium sampling offered an alternative approach for the prediction of tissue residues and dietary risks of PBDEs. Moreover, it should be applied with caution for PEs, OPPs, and OCPs. Improving the application of PDMS for these chemicals in farm ponds warrants future study.
