The conceptualization of a Just-In-Time Adaptive Intervention (JITAI) for the reduction of sedentary behavior in older adults

Abstract: Low physical activity and high sedentary behavior in older adults can be addressed with interventions that are delivered through modern technology. Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs) are an emerging technology-driven behavior-change intervention type and capitalize on data that is collected via mobile sensing technology (e.g., smartphones) to trigger appropriate support in real-life. In this paper we integrated behavior change and aging theory and research as well as knowledge around older adult's te… Show more

“…Across the world, researchers from various disciplines work on exploiting these new opportunities to understand and ultimately improve behavioral health. New intervention designs, methods, and analysis strategies are being developed [ 61 - 64 ]. We expect that these novel research initiatives will be widely disseminated in the scientific literature, which will likely lead to an increase in the research output.…”

“…Smartphone‐based cameras are increasingly used to remotely assess dermatologic conditions or surgical complications 167‐170 and have the potential to identify complications early, providing better, lower cost care. Real‐time reporting can facilitate just‐in‐time interventions or microinterventions, which are cognitive‐behavioral interventions that can be delivered by smartphone or smartwatch to deliver interventions personalized to an individual's current circumstances or environment 171,172 . Examples include reminders to exercise during periods of inactivity or smoking‐cessation texts to suggest coping strategies during reported nicotine cravings.…”
