Abstract: Abstract:Montaigne rarely repented and he viewed confession-both juridical and ecclesiastical-with skepticism. Confession, Montaigne believed, forced a mode of self-representation onto the speaker that was inevitably distorting. Repentance, moreover, made claims about self-transformation that Montaigne found improbable.
