The configuration and experience mapping of an accessible VR environment for effective design reviews

Abstract: This paper presents a new VR interaction environment for the evaluation of digital prototypes, specifically in designer–client review sessions, and documents its implementation via experience mapping. Usability of VR controllers and basic manipulation remains a barrier for lay users, and a range of typical implementations are reviewed, highlighting the need for an easily accessible interface for this setting. The resulting interface configuration – the Control Carousel – demonstrates how the appropriate use of… Show more

“…This section discusses a high-level understanding of VR technology and its working principle. VR entails the user to be “immersed” into a 3D environment derived from a computer-generated simulation [ 34 ]. The VR environment is accessed through a Head Mounted Display (HMD) that also tracks the position and orientation of the head.…”

“…Taken into a VR context, this process becomes even more interesting whereby the designer can view and interact with the concepts in specific environments and settings. Conceptual work in VR interface design has demonstrated this potential in the context of design reviews for example [6]. Furthermore, architects are increasingly using VR to properly visualise and experience the spaces they design, and the fashion world is experimenting with the use of AR all of which present opportunities for interface reimagining and pedagogical considerations [3].…”

“…is method is to convey the unique information of exhibits and cultural relics, without planning the amount of information that the audience can accept [23]. Doing so may also directly lead to the failure of information transmission.…”
