The consumption of cultural experiences in city tourism

Abstract: Whilst considerable attention has been given to the role of cultural tourism in city development and the ‘gentrification’ of inner city areas, there has been little research into the experiences of cultural tourists. Past research shows that their experience is conceptualised as a ‘pre-programmed’ product made especially for mass consumption. It is often assumed that the commoditisation of urban tourism results in ‘standardised’ city environments, loss of culture and traditions, loss of place distinctiveness a… Show more

“…Furthermore, as said by the head of cultural arts of Bandung city, traditional arts and culture in Bandung are on the edge of extinction since the government of Bandung city tends to overlook the arts and cultural heritage of Bandung (Heriyanto, 2015). This somewhat aligns with Wickens (2017), who argued that due to modernization, the portrait of tradition and culture seems to have faded out. Meanwhile, cultural representations play an important role in tourism marketing (De Bernardi, 2019;Grimwood, Muldoon & Stevens, 2019;Zang et al, 2021).…”

“…If we consider Urban Art as a relevant cultural and artistic asset in our assessment of the city’s public spaces, we will be able to understand that its tourism potential is inscribed within the context of what is labelled as urban ‘cultural tourism’. Presently, cultural tourism is an essential element of international tourism consumption (Csapó, 2012; Du Cros and Mckercher, 2002; Richards, 2018; Robinson and Smith, 2005; Smith, 2003; Wickens, 2017). This type of tourism encompasses broad notions of culture that go beyond the concept of ‘cultural places’ to include experiences, creative practices and exposure to local ways of living (Csapó, 2012; Du Cros and Mckercher, 2002; Koster and Randall, 2006; Poon, 2016; Richards, 2011, 2018; Smith, 2003).…”

“…Tourism experiences are “ liminoid contra-normative settings offering a license for thrills, situational disinhibition, and sexual experimentation ” (Berdychevsky and Gibson 2015, 78). Tourists feel less restrained than they do at home and ignore the health risks in pursuit of the pleasure associated with unprotected sex (Wickens 2003). Consuming alcohol, using drugs, partying, being enjoyment-focused, and not feeling bound by the social norms that dictate behavior at home contribute to higher-risk sexual behaviors on vacation (Berdychevsky and Gibson 2015).…”
