The contemporary JAEA Japanese voxel phantoms

Abstract: Average adult Japanese male (JM-103 phantom) and female (JF-103 phantom) voxel (volume pixel) phantoms were newly constructed by modifying the JM and JF phantoms previously developed at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The JM-103 and JF-103 have average characteristics with respect to organ masses and body sizes. Their tissue segmentations were based on International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Publication 103. The anatomical and dosimetric characteristics of JM-103 and JF-103 were compared with th… Show more

“…Table 2 summarizes the organ-absorbed dose per air kerma, i.e., organ-absorbed dose conversion factor, by tissue or organ for the Japanese male voxel phantom JM-103 ( Sato et al 2010 , 2011 ; Sato and Takahashi 2012 , 2017 ; Manabe et al 2014 ). In the case of AP irradiation in all tissues or organs, the lower the energy, the larger the organ-absorbed dose conversion factor.…”

“…The use of a Japanese adult male phantom was thought appropriate due to the difference in body size from that of a Caucasian male, which was the basis for RCP-AM. The JAEA has developed voxel phantom JM-103 using the average Japanese adult male height and weight ( Sato et al 2010 , 2011 ; Sato and Takahashi 2012 , 2017 ; Manabe et al 2014 ), which conformed to the reference voxel phantom RCP-AM defined in ICRP Publication 110 ( ICRP 2009 ). The height and weight of the RCP-AM were 176 cm and 73 kg, respectively, whereas those of the JM-103 were 170 cm and 64 kg.…”

“…The MC-based CT dose calculator WAZA-ARIv2 provides comprehensive organ dose information for a patient according to the organ dose dataset produced by the MC simulation. In WAZA-ARIv2, the organ dose dataset for adult phantoms based on average Japanese developed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) (Sato and Takahashi 2012) and for pediatric phantoms developed by the University of Florida (UF) (Lee et al 2006) are provided. In addition to the datasets for different ages (newborn, 1-, 5-, 10-, and 15-y-old), WAZA-ARIv2 also owns the dataset for three different body shapes for adult phantoms taking the body-shape into account.…”
