The Contribution of Various In Vitro Methodologies to Comprehending the Filling Ability of Root Canal Pastes in Primary Teeth

Abstract: A void-free obturation during root canal treatment on primary teeth is currently very difficult to attain. In this study, the pulpectomy filling abilities of Bio-C Pulpecto (Angelus, Basil, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil) and of zinc oxide eugenol, or “ZOE” (DenPro, Prevest, New York, NY, USA), were compared using several in vitro techniques. Therefore, 30 primary anterior teeth were used in the present in vitro study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), including a multiple comparison procedure (Holm-Sidak method, Dunn’s… Show more

“…The filling capacity of all materials was higher than 98%, regardless of the obturation technique applied. In the present study, the filling capacity was assessed by micro-CT; however, other methodologies such as digital microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis (CLSM), or even SEM could also be used, as previously described [ 32 ]. It is noteworthy that the phase separation of Bio-CP caused by the chemical instability of the material did not influence the filling capacity percentage.…”

“…It is challenging to obtain a void-free root canal filling in clinical pulpectomy practice today, and the success of pulpectomy in primary teeth depends on obturation quality. Therefore, there is no consensus in the literature about the approach offering the best seal for the root canal system in primary teeth [ 12 - 14 ]. This study aimed to compare the quality of three obturation techniques (rotary lentulo spiral, handheld lentulo spiral, and pressure syringe) for two fillings (ZOE paste and Metapex) in primary canines using digital radiography to evaluate the quality of obturation.…”
