The Conversion Efficiency of trans-11 and trans-12 18:1 by Δ9-Desaturation Differs in Rats

Abstract: The present study evaluated and compared the efficiency of the conversion of t11 18:1 and t12 18:1 to their corresponding dienoic acids (c9,tn 18:2) and assessed whether differences due to gender existed in several tissues of rats. Three groups of 4-wk-old male and female rats were fed for 3 wk a diet supplemented with 0, 0.5, or 1% of a trans-octadecenoic acid isomer mixture (tOIM) containing t11 18:1 and t12 18:1 in equal proportion. t11 18:1 and t12 18:1 were incorporated in a tissue-specific manner, and th… Show more

“…Ovine fat diets promoted a deposition of these minor isomers, whose biological effects are not completely understood. In human diets, the most common TFA is the t11-18:1 [4], and due to its bioconversion into c9,t11 CLA isomer by SCD, the t11-18:1 has been considered a neutral or beneficial trans isomer [13]. Butter naturally enriched in t11-18:1 and c9,t11 CLA isomer reduced lipid deposition in rabbits aorta [29].…”

“…For this purpose, we used the average of 20% for the t11-18:1 conversion to c9,t11, reported for male Wistar rats by Kraft et al [4]. The deposition values were calculated by dividing the total amount of c9,t11 quantified in the tissue by the total amount of c9,t11 ingested (the exogenous contribution) plus 20% of t11-18:1 derived (the endogenous contribution).…”

“…Indeed, trans-11 was found to give rise to cis-9, trans-11-C 18:2 (as a conjugated linoleic acid, CLA) through D-9 desaturation in liver microsomes, while under the same experimental conditions trans-9 stayed unchanged [49]. In whole rats, dietary trans-11 was also transformed into cis-9, trans-11-C 18:2 in most organs [50]. This CLA added to the diet of pigs was abundantly recovered in liver PL [51].…”
