The Convoy Model andLater‐LifeFamily Relationships

Abstract: The convoy model of social relations was developed to provide a heuristic framework for conceptualizing and understanding social relationships. In this Original Voices article, we begin with an overview of the theoretical tenets of the convoy model, including its value in addressing situational and contextual influences, especially variability in family forms and cultural diversity across the life span, but particularly in older adulthood. We also consider the contributions of the convoy model to the field of … Show more

“…The procedure has been reported in detail elsewhere. 27 Briefly, respondents were shown a series of 3 concentric circles, with the word "you" at the center, and were then asked to imagine themselves at the center of the circles and list the names of important people in their lives according to how close they felt to them. The inner circle represented "people to whom you feel so close that it is hard to imagine life without them."…”

“…A long tradition of research on social networks and informal support in old age care has emphasised the importance of inter-household ties ( Connidis and Barnett, 2018 ). The convoy model posits that social ties with non-residential family members and friends sustain care and resource exchanges, companionship, emotional support, and a sense of ontological security ( Kahn and Antonucci, 1980 ; Fuller et al, 2020 ), all of which are essential to supporting older adults’ mental well-being ( Rook et al, 2011 ). Furthermore, according to the stress-coping theory, the presence of a social convoy and the material and non-material support exchanged through social networks play a crucial role in mitigating generalised stress and stress related to specific life course processes and events such as ageing and illness ( Wong and Ujimoto, 1998 ; Carver and Vargas 2011 ).…”

“…The social convoy model is a systematic theoretical paradigm of social support (Kahn & Antonucci, 1980) employed in the study. The model has widely been used in numerous studies, such as among the elderly (Fuller et al, 2020), children and youth (Levitt, 2005), and living residents (Perkins et al, 2013). However, it is still under-explored in a prison context.…”

“…In conjunction with prior studies, this model often serves as a sensitising mechanism (Charmaz, 2006) and a primary source for the analysis, emphasising the importance and existence of the relationships among drug-abuse prisoners and their social support. The model also attempts to explain a heuristic structure for social relationship conceptualisation and comprehension (Fuller et al, 2020). In the context of the drug-abuse prisoners, the social convoy model explained social support depending on the network of social relationships based on the familiarity and intimacy of the relationships.…”
