The cooperative Jahn–Teller distorted structures of rubidium chromium(II) trichloride and caesium chromium(II) trichloride

Abstract: (1964). Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 334,[113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124]. This phase has a slightly distorted hexagonal perovskite structure and consists of chains of alternating elongated and compressed facesharing octahedra. Below 170 K CsCrCI 3 is isomorphous with fl-RbCrC13.

“…Rb),24,25 the binary phase CrS, represents one of the few previously characterised examples of such a distortion in a sulphide 26. The erbium ions exhibit two different coordination environments, octahedral and monocapped trigonal prismatic, with average Er-S bond lengths of ca.…”

“…Ternary halides containing Cr 2+ or Cu 2+ undergo structural phase transitions caused by the co-operative Jahn-Teller effect (Crama et al, 1978(Crama et al, , 1979Crama, 1981), driven by interactions between localized orbital electronic states and the crystal lattice (Gehring & Gehring, 1975). One of the most representative structures demonstrating a series of such transitions is RbCuCl 3 , which undergoes two Jahn-Teller structural phase transitions at 262 and 339 K (Bastow & Whitfield, 1980).…”
