The Core‐Periphery Structure in the Yangtze River Delta: An Enterprise Linkage Perspective, 1978–2019

Abstract: Metropolitan areas are important for engaging in fierce global competition. Cities in metropolitan areas in China are generally characterized by a core-periphery structure. The Yangtze River Delta metropolitan area (YRD) is a national strategic region in which Shanghai, as a central city, drives the economic growth of hinterland cities. Exploring the spatiotemporal characteristics and influencing factors between the central city and its hinterland cities in the YRD can provide a basis for promoting regional de… Show more

“…The population concentration in the Yangtze River Economic Belt ( Figure 3 ) forms an obvious “core–periphery” structure, decreasing from the center to the periphery [ 42 ]. The uneven spatial pattern in the east is higher than that in the west.…”

“…Port logistics and urban economy will show different characteristics in different development periods, and if the development rules between these two can be grasped, then the development ideas of port logistics and urban economy at the present stage and in the future can be formed from them [6][7][8][9]. In recent years, port cities have coincidentally put forward the development strategies of "port-city linkage" and "portcity co-prosperity", and advocated the vigorous development of port logistics parks (centers), port industries, supporting infrastructure and logistics channels, etc., in order to achieve the major goal of mutually beneficial and win-win situation and virtuous cycle between port logistics and city economy [10][11][12][13]. Therefore, it is a point of interest and concern for many scholars to carry out research on the linkage development of both port logistics and urban economy, so that the unity of mutual promotion and coordination between port logistics and urban economy can be formed [14][15][16].…”

“…Fang et al [14] established a tourism economy network of contacts by modifying the gravity model and applied the social network analysis method to conduct a quantitative analysis of the network and analyze the reasons for the spatial differences in the tourism economy. Liang and Shi [15] and Bian [16] analyzed the evolution of the core-edge spatial structure of the tourism cities. Based on the tourist flow potential index, Huang [17] suggested that there was a significant linear relationship between the tourist flow potential and GDP in the YRDUA region.…”
