The correlation between audible noise and corona current in time domain caused by single positive corona source on the conductor

Abstract: Audible noise and corona current are two main DC corona effects, and they may both highly depend on the characteristics of space charges generated during corona discharge. However, relatively little investigation has previously been done on the correlation between them especially in time-domain. In the present work, the timedomain waveforms of audible noise and corona current generated by single positive corona source were recorded simultaneously. Their characteristics were carefully analyzed and found to be c… Show more

“…Lu and Chen discussed the consistency analysis between the electric field and AN caused by UHV test lines and transmission lines [18,19]. Li and Cui investigated the time-domain characteristics of AN produced by corona from DC conductors, then the correlation between audible noise and corona current was discussed in detail [20][21][22]. Yi and Zhang proposed an acoustic source model to simulate the sound pressure pulse of positive DC corona discharge [23].…”

“…Yi and Zhang proposed an acoustic source model to simulate the sound pressure pulse of positive DC corona discharge [23]. The references [20][21][22][23] mainly discussed the mechanism of audible noise, and it is difficult to predict the AN level of practical transmission lines by using the obtained conclusions due to the complexities of wide area calculation.…”

“…When corona-induced vibration of conductor occurs, the equilibrium of air molecules around the conductor may be disturbed [14][15][16][17][18]. At the same time, the interactions between the space charges and air molecules will also cause the vibration of air molecules and result in the generation of AN in the process of corona discharge [1, [19][20][21][22]. The sound pressure is usually used to characterise the disturbance of air pressure and the level of AN.…”

“…As for the audible noise, previous experimental investigations focused more on the frequency domain measurements and the correlation between the frequency domain characteristics and the corona current was given in [6]. But the time-domain characteristics of the audible noise were seldom investigated [10,11]. The timedomain measurement for the audible noise can be helpful to reveal the intrinsic characteristics of the audible noise, and can be used to estimate and eliminate background noise effectively.…”

“…In the ref. [11] the time-domain correlation between the audible noise and corona current was studied and gave evidences that the correlation was due to the space charges. Over all, the correlations between multiple DC corona effects were not systematically investigated before.…”
