Abstract:A deeper understanding of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) can in turn shed light on the evolution of coating structures during such oxidation processes. Here, a three-dimensional (3D) structure of PEO coating was investigated based on the morphologies at different locations in a PEO coating and on the elemental distribution along certain sections. The coating surface was dominated by a crater-or pancake-like structure of alumina surrounded by Si-rich nodules. A barrier layer with a thickness of~1 µm consisting of clustered cells was present at the aluminum/coating interface. As the coating thickened, the PEO coating gradually evolved into a distinct three-layer structure, which included a barrier layer, an internal structure with numerous closed holes, and an outer layer with a rough surface. During the PEO process, molten zones formed along with the plasma discharges. The volume and lifetime of the molten zones changed with oxidation time. The diversities of cooling rates around the molten zones resulted in structural differences along a certain section of the coating. A growth and discharge model of PEO coatings was established based on the 3D structure of the particular coating studied herein.

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating was initially prepared on 6061 Al alloy, and subsequently coated with Ag using magnetron sputtering. Laser beam scan (LBS) treatments were then applied to infiltrate the sputtered Ag into the MAO coating in order to simulate the corrosion behaviour of the MAO coating during the neutral salt spray test (NSST). Cross-sectional morphologies and Ag element distribution maps were studied by using the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) on the MAO-Ag coated samples after LBS infiltration. The results showed that there existed the microcracks with tree-root or lightning shape within the MAO coating. Interconnected aggregates, including micro-pores, large cavities far beneath the surface and tree-root like micro-cracks, served as complex corrosion channels during salt spray corrosion. Through these corrosion channels, the salt spray penetrated gradually into the interface between the MAO coating and the original Al substrate, thus causing corrosion of the Al substrate during the NSST. The LBS treatment is presented as a method to explore the subtle micro-crack and pore channels associated to the MAO coating and to provide information that paves the way towards understanding of corrosion phenomena in these porous systems.

This work focuses on the experimental characterization and mechanical behavior modeling of aeronautical alloy based composite to simulate tension test by finite element method and experimental test. The numerical finite element simulation allowed us to understand and manage a number of phenomena encountered during the mechanical behavior of our composites. Tensile tests applied have shown large changes in mechanical properties of the base alloy after coating, which are possibly related to the very different nature of the assembled materials and conditions of application. We note a strong decrease of the elastic limit of AG3 coated compared to AU4G. The high ductility of this alloy is the cause which engenders during the gritting process a large penetration of the granule particles in the substrate and the creation of plastic zones. Thus, a radial compression is exerted on the section which causes a plastification process. The decrease of the average section of the substrate after sandblasting, the stress concentration at the cavity and / or the compressive residual stress created when sandblasting are responsible for the decrease in breaking strength of the AU4G compared to the AG3. The material becomes hard and fragile. The experimental results obtained during our study are consistent with those of the simulation. Indeed, it was noted that the concentration of stresses during the tensile tests was located at the ends of the useful length of the test specimen.
