The correlation of combined OGG1, CYP1A1 and GSTP1 gene variants and risk of lung cancer of male Iraqi waterpipe tobacco smokers

Abstract: Genetic polymorphisms of genes whose products are responsible for activities, such as xenobiotic metabolism, mutagen detoxification and DNA-repair, have been predicted to be associated with the risk of developing lung cancer (LC). The association of LC with tobacco smoking has been extensively investigated, but no studies have focused on the Arab ethnicity. Previously, we examined the association between genetic polymorphisms among Phase I and Phase II metabolism genes and the risk of LC. Here, we extend the d… Show more

“…It has been published that via preventing PTEN and stimulating β-Catenin and Akt pathways, the AhR/CYP1A1 signaling pathway affected the phenotypes of breast cancer stem cells, such as growth, development, renewal, and chemoresistance ( Al-Dhfyan et al, 2017 ). Recent research has covered the genetic polymorphisms of CYP1A1 carried weight with the risk of developing cancers containing lung cancer ( Kudhair et al, 2020 ), upper digestive tract cancer ( Tian et al, 2019 ; Zhao et al, 2019 ), and thyroid carcinoma ( Bufalo et al, 2006 ; Figlioli et al, 2016 ). In thyroid carcinoma patients, CYP1A1 could serve as a prognostic marker to point to the grade of tumor severity, with the CYP1A1 gene expression associated with tumor size, the presence of metastasis, and advanced clinical stage ( GallegosVargas et al, 2016 ).…”

“…This alteration leads to a substitution of serine with cysteine at codon 326, commonly referred to as Ser326Cys. It has been suggested that this genetic variation can alter the function of OGG1 and potentially increase susceptibility to certain diseases [10,11].…”

“…In some countries, the rate of waterpipe use has surpassed that of cigarettes (Jawad et al, 2018). Waterpipe smoking is associated with several health problems (Reyes-Caballero et al, 2020;Sullman, Gras, Kagialis, Papageorgi, & Font-Mayolas, 2020), including cardiovascular diseases (Alomari, Khabour, Alzoubi, & Eissenberg, 2020;Nemmar et al, 2020), respiratory diseases (Kudhair, Alabid, Zayed, Lafta, & Taheri-Kafrani, 2020;Nemmar, Al-Salam, Beegam, Yuvaraju, & Ali, 2019), and cancer (Kudhair et al, 2020;Sabi et al, 2020).…”
