The Cost-Effectiveness of Requesting a Complete Blood Count (CBC) in the Management of COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Background: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, studies have attempted to determine the value of the different laboratory investigations. This study aims to assess the cost-effectiveness of requesting a complete blood count (CBC) for COVID-19 patients, as opposed to ordering a COVID-19 antibody titer in Saudi Arabia. Methods: The prices of a CBC, COVID-19 PCR, and antibody titer were obtained from 40 healthcare establishments in Saudi Arabia, between January and February 2022. Results: Requesting a C… Show more

“…Severe forms of COVID-19 that lead to mortality have been described to be of significantly high viral load and reduced adaptive immune response, namely, T and B cell responses [23]. In this study, the NLR had the capacity to predict mortality on its own and remains an invaluable tool in the management of COVID-19 cases given its wide availability and cost-effectiveness in comparison to other laboratory investigations [24].…”

“…Taken together, these findings highlight the potential role of emerging biomarkers in cancer management in the era of immunotherapy. Complete blood counts and their derived novel inflammatory markers have been ruled cost-effective tools in several instances ( 69 , 70 ). Their straightforward application and affordability support their adoption, particularly when their ability to predict treatment prognosis has been validated.…”

“…Saudi Arabia was not different from the rest of the world in being affected by it, despite the strict and progressive measures it took to limit the pandemic's impact on the country [38]. Despite the local advances in identifying cost-effective prognostic markers of COVID-19 [39,40], COVID-19 vaccination was vital in tackling the pandemic and limiting its impact on Saudi public health. However, the public will to be vaccinated in Saudi Arabia was complex and differed across the country [41,42].…”
