Abstract: This article evaluates rates of osteoarthritis of the lower limb in human remains from Deir el-Medina in order to compare the health of the residents of Deir el-Medina with previous studies on other ancient Egyptian and Nubian populations. This study focuses on osteological observations from the commingled New Kingdom human remains documented during the 2012-2014 field seasons of the Institut Français d'Archéologie Orientale. “…Weiss and Jurmain (2007) also suggested that a missing element in any study of biomechanical changes, especially those associated with OA, is subadult risk, with an interest in establishing juvenile age of onset, injury, and activity intensity. Thus, most recent research on OA, entheseal changes, and CSG was careful to use population-oriented approaches, factor in age at death and sex, and note if subadults were affected (Austin, 2017;Becker, 2017;Becker and Goldstein, 2017;Cheverko and Bartelink, 2017;Domett et al, 2017;Palmer et al, 2016;Schrader and Buzon, 2017).…”

“…Creating and carrying a shaft or pole representing the rulers of El Palmar for a long time and distance can undoubtedly create physiological stress in the joints. The DJD in the knees and ankles could be related to normal weight-bearing and aging (Zampetti et al 2016), as well as activities that placed significantly more force on the knee by requiring frequent bending from ascending and descending stairs, crossing varied terrain, and hiking (Austin 2017; Jensen 2008; Komistek et al 2005). If he was an ambassador or banner-bearer and therefore involved in a tributary role as part of the standard-bearers, it is likely that he frequently went up and down stairs and often walked shorter and longer distances over a wide range of terrains.…”

“…The commute of people from home to work is a phenomenon that has shaped society and cities throughout the ages, from ancient Egypt to modern New York City (Bram and McKay 2005;Austin 2017). These daily recurrent movements form a complex network that is highly correlated with the socioeconomic factors of cities (Simini et al 2012;Spadon et al 2019).…”
