The cost of corrosion in China

Abstract: Corrosion is a ubiquitous and costly problem for a variety of industries. Understanding and reducing the cost of corrosion remain primary interests for corrosion professionals and relevant asset owners. The present study summarises the findings that arose from the landmark “Study of Corrosion Status and Control Strategies in China”, a key consulting project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2015, which sought to determine the national cost of corrosion and costs associated with representative industries… Show more

“…Uhlig's report estimated the annual cost of corrosion in the United States to be US$ 5.5 billion or 2.1% of the 1949 gross national product (GNP). This study measured the total costs by summing the costs related to anti-corrosion materials and corrosioninduced maintenance and replacement handled by owners and operators (direct) as well as those related to users (indirect) [5,12].…”

“…A common observation of these studies was that the costs of corrosion ranged from approximately 1-5% of the GNP of each nation. The variation in the corrosion cost with respect to GNP was ascribed to the methodology used by each study and the specifics of each country [12].…”

“…Corrosion is the performance degradation phenomenon of metals under the action of the surrounding medium [1,2]. The annual economic loss caused by corrosion accounts for 3%∼5% of the world's GDP, and 20% of the total corrosion are related to soil corrosion [3][4][5]. According to Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), about 300 major accidents were annually took place in United States, causing $310 million or more in direct damage (https://phmsa.dot.gov/).…”

“…The average annual corrosion-related cost is estimated at $7 billion to monitor, replace, and maintain these assets [2]. In China, a study estimated that the cost of corrosion was approximately 310 billion USD, representing about 3.34% of the gross domestic product [3]. This proves that corrosion in pipelines is a major problem in the industry and this problem will be worsen along the time if no action is taken to minimize the problem.…”
