Currently, land use planning is at the fork of its further development. Moreover, in the next year or two, depending on how the federal legislator will arrive, this issue will be resolved, which will inevitably affect related areas. The authors consider the key factors determining (to one degree or another) certain vectors of land use planning development for different stages, the progress of work on the new edition of the relevant law, as well as the approaches of the State University of Land Use Planning to solving this issue. It is pointed out that delaying the adoption of this new version may cause aggravation of a number of problems with agricultural land use, including difficulties in implementing the State Program to involve abandoned land in household turnover, as well as allocation of unclaimed land shares to plots with subsequent cadastral registration, which are invalid in 2025
