The cranial dura mater: a review of its history, embryology, and anatomy

Abstract: Knowledge of the cranial dura mater has a rich history. The embryology is complex, and the surgical anatomy of this layer and its specializations are important to the neurosurgeon.

“…Therefore, it is very important to understand the morphological and histological inner structures of the bony canal. Histologically, the dura mater has a three-layered architecture: the outermost layer (periosteal layer), meningeal layer, and innermost layer (dural border cell layer) [7,8,9]. In addition, a five-layered architecture of the dura mater has been reported based on the orientation of collagen fibers on scanning electron microscopic images [10].…”

“…While traumatic injury of the MMA often leads to the formation of epidural hematoma, it interestingly caused arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in our patient. The MMA and MMV run in the space between the bone surface layer of the dura and inner table of the skull, 5,6) and the occurrence of many traumatic epidural hematomas is reported to be associated with skull fracture. 7) In trauma, the dura mater is partly detached from the inner table of the skull due to fracture or large external force, and hematoma develops primarily in the space created by this detachment.…”

“…It is trickier when the cranial sutures are closed, due to the firm connections Fig. 3 Normal findings in a male, 5 months old: the photograph demonstrates a few wide bridging veins between the calvarium and the dura mater [8]. Once the dura matter is exposed, cutting it at its base on both sides and gently lifting it up is easy.…”
