The Criminal Narrative Experience of Psychopathic and Personality Disordered Offenders

Abstract: Given the challenges associated with psychopathic and personality disordered offenders, further insight is needed. One way of doing this is by looking at offending from the first-person perspective. “…Elated Hero, Calm Professional, Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim. This framework has also been replicated in a range of other studies, thus suggesting further support for the importance of the Circumplex of Emotions (Russell, 1997), Narrative Theory (McAdams, 1988) their link with Frye's (1957) Theory of Mythoi, and their association and importance in explaining CNE (Goodlad, Ioannou, & Hunter, 2018;Ioannou, Canter & Youngs, 2017;Ioannou, Synnott, Lowe, & Tzani Pepelasi, 2018).…”

“…Future research could expand this current study by exploring narrative roles. Previous studies on narratives have provided valuable information to understand human behaviours across different offenders (Canter, Kaouri & Ioannou, 2003;Ioannou, 2006;Ioannou, Canter, Youngs & Synnott, 2015;Ioannou, Canter & Youngs, 2017;Goodlad, Ioannou & Hunter, 2018;Ioannou, Synnott, Lowe & Tzani-Pepelasi, 2018;Ciesla, Ioannou & Hammond, 2018).…”

“…The notion of the four structured narrative themes has been supported by numerous research studies across a variety of contexts and populations that includes arsonists (Canter & Fritzon, 1998), terrorism (Canter, Sarangi, & Youngs, 2014), school shootings (Ioannou, Hammond, & Simpson, 2015b), rioters (Willmott & Ioannou, 2017), psychopathic and personality disordered offenders (Goodlad, Ioannou, & Hunter, 2019), burglary (Yokota & Canter, 2004), contract killing (Yaneva, Ioannou, Hammond, & Synnott, 2018), sexual assaults (Almond & Canter, 2007), homicide (Santtilla, Hakkanen, Canter & Elfgren, 2003), online and offline grooming (Ioannou, Synnott, Reynolds, & Pearson, 2018b), stalking (Canter & Ioannou, 2004), and offenders in general for both adult offenders (Ioannou, Canter, Youngs, & Synnott, 2015a) and young offenders (Ioannou, Synnott, Lowe, & Tzani‐Pepelasi, 2018a).…”
