The critical current in a NbTi tape measured in different directions of magnetic field and the current reduction due to the self field

Abstract: The critical current in a NbTi tape measured in different directions of magnetic field and the current reduction due to the self field. The tape is extra sensitive for the component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the surface. Without external field this component of the self field reduces the critical current far below its intrinsic value. A one dimensional rodel can describe the reduction of critical current due to the self field in a thin tape.-

“…For the sake of comprehensiveness, the plot in figure 2 is completed with the results achieved assuming an isotropic j c (B), i.e. with k = 1, and j c0 was increased to 4.516×10 8 A m −2 in order to maintain Figure 2. Critical currents determined from the distributions calculated for a range of magnetic fields.…”

“…Calculation of the magnetic field distribution in the critical state with the magnetic-field-dependent critical current density is far from straightforward. For some geometries, simplified computations have provided an explanation of such self-field related phenomena as the saturation of critical current at low fields [8,9] and the apparent critical current degradation of a stacked conductor [10]. Consideration of self-field effects with the help of simplified calculation procedures allowed us to explain the behaviour of cable-in-conduit or multistrand conductors from the low-T c superconductor NbTi [11,12].…”
