Introduction Case reports represent a relevant, timely and important study design in advancing medical scientific knowledge. They allow integration between clinical practice and clinical epidemiology. We aimed to assess the completeness of reporting (COR) of case reports published in high‐impact journals. We assessed the COR of case reports using the CARE guidelines. Materials and methods We selected three high‐impact journals and one journal specialized in publishing case reports, in which we included all published case reports from July to December 2017. Median COR score was calculated per study, and CORs were compared between journals with and without endorsement of CARE guidelines. Results One hundred and fourteen case reports were included. Overall median COR was 81%, IQR [63%‐96%]. Sections with the highest COR (84%‐100%) were patient information, clinical findings, therapeutic intervention, follow‐up and outcomes, discussion and informed consent. Sections with the lowest COR were title, keywords, timeline and patient perspective (2%‐34%). COR was higher in journals endorsing in comparison to those not endorsing CARE guidelines (77% vs 65%), respectively, median difference = −12% 95% CI [−16% to −7%]. Discussion Overall completeness of case reports in included journals is high especially for CARE endorsing and dedicated journals but reporting of some items could be improved. Ongoing and future evaluations of endorsement status of reporting guidelines in medical journals should be assessed to improve completeness and reduce waste of clinical research, including case reports.

Objective: The optimal acupoints for a particular disease can be determined by analysis of diagnosis patterns. The objective of this study was to reveal the association between such patterns and the acupoints prescribed in clinical practice using medical data extracted from case reports. Methods: This study evaluated online virtual diagnoses made by currently practicing Korean medical doctors (N = 80). The doctors were presented with 10 case reports published in Korean medical journals and were asked to diagnose the patients and prescribe acupoints accordingly. A network analysis and the term frequency-inverse document frequency (tf-idf) method were used to analyse and quantify the relationship between diagnosis patterns and prescribed acupoints. Results: The network analysis showed that ST36, LI4, LR3, and SP6 were the most frequently used acupoints across all diagnoses. The tf-idf values showed the acupoints used for specific diseases, such as BL40 for bladder disease and LU9 for lung disease. Conclusions: The associations between diagnosis patterns and prescribed acupoints were identified using an online virtual diagnosis modality. Network and text mining analyses revealed commonly applied and disease-specific acupoints in both qualitative and quantitative terms.

Objectives: A case report is a detailed report of the symptoms, signs, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of an individual patient. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of case reports from the Journal of Korean Medicine by the CARE (CAse REport) Guideline. Methods: Case reports published in the Journal of Korean Medicine from January 2016 to March 2020 were searched from Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS). We assessed the quality of reporting based on CARE (CAse REport) guideline as 'Sufficient', 'Not-Sufficient' and 'Not-Report'. Results: A total of 22 case reports were finally included for the assessment. The reporting items were reported as of reporting quality. After checking the result, there was a deviation in the sub-item reporting rate by a maximum 89.29%, a minimum 66.67% and a median 82.14% in case reports. Also after checking the quality in case reports by 28 detailed items in CARE guidelines, there were not reported 77% or more in the 5 sub-items 'Intervention adherence and tolerability', 'Informed consent', 'Adverse and unanticipated events', 'Diagnostic challenges', 'Patient perspective'. Conclusion: There is a need to improve the quality of case reports in the journal of Korean Medicine based on various studies using CARE guideline.
