Research has examined the detrimental effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on health and physical fitness in adolescents; however, studies comparing these parameters before and after the COVID-19 outbreak have been scarce. Therefore, this study investigated differences in perceived health status, perceived physical fitness, and participation in physical activity among adolescents in the Republic of Korea before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. We chose a sample of data from 2102 adolescents aged 14–19, collected as part of a national survey by the Republic of Korea Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism from 2019 to 2021. We focused on five items from the survey related to health awareness and physical activity. Although perceived health status was lower in 2021 than in 2019 or 2020, there were no differences in perceived physical fitness during the three years of the study. Regular participation in physical activity was less common in 2020 than in 2019 or 2021. The proportion of adolescents reporting sufficient rest and sleep was lower in 2021 than in 2020. In addition, fewer adolescents reported eating regular meals and engaging in nutritional supplementation in 2021 than in 2019 and 2020. Rates of abstinence from alcohol and smoking cessation were higher in 2021 than in 2019 or 2020. For all three years, adolescents reported the following as the primary reasons for engaging in regular physical activity (in order): “maintenance of mental health”, “maintenance of physical health”, “help in daily life”, and “reduction of medical expenses”. In preparation for the post-COVID-19 era, these results highlight the need to prepare measures and countermeasures to promote health and physical activity among adolescents in the Republic of Korea.

“…Classroom teachers often consider PE a release from "high status" subject work rather than an integral aspect of students' education (Lynch & Soukup, 2017;Milić et al 2022). This can result in HPE receiving less emphasis, time, and resourcing than other KLAs (Cruickshank et al, 2021b;Birch & Auld, 2020;Lowry et al, 2022) which can be problematic in light of Australian teachers stating a lack of time is a key barrier to achieving HPE outcomes (Morgan & Hansen, 2008;Peralta et al, 2021;Williams, 2017). In addition, the Measurement Framework for Schooling in Australia, 2020 (ACARA 2020) identifies literacy, numeracy, civics and citizenship, ICT literacy, and science literacy as key performance measures within the National Assessment Program, thus highlighting marginalisation and a subsequent lack of accountability for reporting on the HPE learning area.…”

‘It’s not a priority’: Australian generalist classroom teacher experiences of teaching the Health Education component of Health and Physical Education

The study purpose was to address a gap in the literature and gain a better understanding of Australian, specifically Tasmanian, primary school classroom teachers’ experiences of teaching health education (HE). By classroom teachers we mean generalist primary teachers, who in Australia typically teach all eight key learning areas (KLAs). In most Australian states and territories, HE exists within the health and physical education (HPE) mandated KLA, but often the delivery of HE is a responsibility assumed by classroom teachers as opposed to HPE specialists. Our study involved 53 primary classroom teacher participants in Tasmania and examined the state of play of HE. We used a mixed methods research design that included an online survey through which participants were subsequently invited to take part in semi-structured interviews. While participants tended to value HPE, we found HE was even more disenfranchised than physical education, within HPE as an already marginalised area, compared to “more academic” KLAs. This “double marginalisation” contributed to reports of inconsistent delivery of HE. Consistent with the health promoting schools agenda, we suggest a whole of school approach in addition to increased collaboration between teachers and increased HE professional learning opportunities for classroom teachers is required to facilitate change and increased prioritisation of HE in schools.

The aim is to assess the impact of prolonged running on the endurance and attention indicators of children aged 9-10 years in physical education classes at school. The pedagogical experiment was conducted for 4 months based on the secondary general educational school 60 (Kirov, Russia), 120 schoolchildren from the third grade took part in it. 34 physical education lessons were held in each class. Schoolchildren from the control group were engaged in a standard physical education program for younger schoolchildren. The children from the experimental group also worked within the framework of the usual program, but during each lesson, they performed a long run of 6 minutes. Overall endurance was assessed using the K Cooper (6 minutes) test and the attention of schoolchildren was assessed by the "Schulte Tables" test. Both tests were performed before and after the pedagogical experiment. Prior to the study, there were no significant differences between classes in both tests (p>0.05). After the end of the study, the performance of children in the control group improved in the endurance test by 6.8% and 7.2% (p>0.05), and in the experimental group improved by 24.9% and 18.9% (p<0.05). In the attention test, the indicators of the control group increased by 10.1% and 8.6% (p>0.05), and in the experimental group by 25.2% and 31.2% (p<0.05). Long-running can be introduced into the physical education program at school to improve the endurance and attention of schoolchildren aged 9-10 years.
