The cusp of Carabelli: Frequency, distribution and type in the Bengaluru population

Abstract: Aims: Detailed description and study of teeth traits could provide valuable information regarding phylogeny of man and distinctions between races and subraces. But morphological variations of the human dentition have not been utilized to their full potential by anthropologists concerned with patterns of human biological variation in Indian population. The aim of the present study is to detect the frequency and degree of expression of Carabelli's trait in Bengaluru population, this helps to develop… Show more

“…As per the study conducted by Smita et al ,[ 10 ] Type 3 (Dahlberg classification) was the one that was most frequently expressed, while Type 6 was least frequently expressed and both the types were expressed in Islamic groups. In 90% of the groups surveyed, bilateral trait expression was noted.…”

“…[ 9 ] This is because size and shape of the tooth, number of tooth, frequency of occurrence, and their morphology have a strong genetic basis and can be used as variables to have a deeper insight into microevolutionary trends and to assess biological relationships. [ 10 ]…”

“…10 The clinical significance of cusp of Carabelli and other accessory cusps is that they may cause some clinical disturbances such as occlusal interferences, esthetic problems, accidental cusp fracture, carious lesion in cusp of Carabelli groove and irritation of tongue during speech and mastication etc. 11,12 The occlusal contacts between the accessory cusps and opposing teeth cause attritional wear which are characterized by smooth and polished delineated areas known as wear facets. 13 Moreover, these occlusal contacts occur when the maxillary molars occlude with the lingual slopes of mandibular molars.…”
