The cytology of intracranial clear cell meningioma with an unusual scalp presentation

Abstract: Intracranial meningiomas are not often aspirated unless they erode the skull and present as swelling in the head and neck region. We describe the cytologic findings of fine needle aspiration cytology in a clear cell variant of intracranial meningioma presenting with swelling in the left parietal region of the scalp in a 45-year-old woman. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology. Clear cell meningioma is characterized by patternless sheets of clear polygonal cells. Clear cell meningioma is a rare distinct… Show more

“…In contrast, CCMs have spindled to polygonal cells in sheets with clear vacuolated d cytoplasm and bland-appearing nuclei with inconspicuous nucleoli. [ 4 ] On IHC, they show membranouspositivity for EMA and negativity for cytokeratin. [ 4 ] CCM should also be separated from hemangioblastoma the later present as a cyst with mural nodule having leptomeningeal attachment.…”

Cytologically it shows anastomosing network of blood vessels separated by stromal cells with medium to large nuclei having foamy cytoplasm.…”

“…Meningioma is an encapsulated tumor in the central nervous system which originates from meningothelial arachnoid cells. 1,2 The majority of meningiomas are benign, yet it could be dangerous if the tumor expands and emerging causing an increase of intracranial pressure because of its intracranial location and often leads to headache, nausea, vomit, incoordination, and seizure. 3,4 Based on WHO, meningioma can be classified into 3 grades, i.e.…”
